Meet Trigger
Trigger joined our family through adoption in March 2026, when she was three years old. But she was not new to us. Brittani and Zhanna had already spent years showing alongside her, so when she officially became part of our home, it felt less like meeting someone new and more like bringing family home.
Zhanna is about eight months younger than Trigger, but from the very first time they met, Zhanna naturally took the lead and Trigger was perfectly happy to follow. Their relationship has always had a quiet balance to it.
The first time Zhanna swam in deep water, Trigger was right beside her. Her calm presence gave Zhanna the confidence to keep going, and that is the same effect Trigger has on our whole family.
She is sweet, gentle, and happy to play with any dog who brings a playful spirit. Even with her soft and submissive nature, Trigger carries an unmistakable sense of restrained strength. She does not need to announce it. You can simply feel that it is there.

Why Trigger Is in Our Breeding Program
When Trigger joined our family at three years old, it would have been easy to think, “Great, now we have another female we can breed.”
But that is not how we make breeding decisions.
We spent nearly three years researching, learning, and planning before making decisions about Zhanna’s future. Trigger deserves that same level of care. Even though she came into heat only two months after joining our family, we chose not to breed her. We do not breed simply because a dog is available or physically able to have puppies.
Before Trigger is ever considered for a litter, she must complete the appropriate health and genetic testing. Her structure, movement, temperament, pedigree, and overall contribution to the breed must all be carefully evaluated. We will also take the time to select a male who truly complements her, rather than choosing a stud simply because he is convenient.
If Trigger did not have the health, structure, or temperament we believe a Black Russian Terrier should possess, she would not be considered for our breeding program. In truth, if her temperament were not stable and trustworthy, she would not have remained in our family home either.
Trigger brings a deeply loving and people-focused nature to our program. She wants to be beside whoever is caring for her and quickly forms a close connection with her handler. We believe she could have made a wonderful therapy dog, and with training from puppyhood, she may also have had excellent potential as a service dog.
Trigger may not share Zhanna’s intense problem-solving intelligence, but she brings her own strengths. She has a beautifully balanced structure, a calm presence, and an affectionate temperament that makes her an excellent example of the Black Russian Terrier.
Her place in our program will never be based on convenience. It will be earned through careful evaluation, responsible planning, and a clear understanding of what she could contribute to the next generation.
Happiest With Dirt Beneath Her Paws
Trigger has an intense love for being outside and surrounded by nature.
Before she joined our family, her original owner, Liz, would affectionately describe her as “a feral dog,” and honestly, it fits. Trigger comes alive outdoors. Whether she is exploring a trail, standing in the water, watching the children at a playground, or simply stretching out in the fresh air, she is completely in her element.
The moment she notices us preparing to leave, her whole body lights up. She runs toward the door, wiggling and wagging her little nub, determined not to be left behind. She does not need an elaborate destination. To Trigger, even a simple trip to the playground is an adventure worth celebrating.
She jumps out of the car with pure excitement, ready to investigate every sound, scent, and patch of ground. She loves being included, but more than that, she loves experiencing the world beside her people.
That adventurous spirit is one of the things we love most about her. Trigger reminds us that joy does not always need a grand plan. Sometimes it is found in an open field, a muddy trail, a breeze through the trees, and the certainty that your family brought you along.
Trigger’s Structure, Movement, and Breed Type
Trigger is a beautifully balanced Black Russian Terrier and a strong example of the breed as a whole. Nothing about her feels exaggerated or out of proportion. Her substance, structure, coat, movement, and temperament come together in a way that feels both powerful and functional.
Head and Expression
Trigger has a strong, well-proportioned head with the unmistakable expression we look for in a Black Russian Terrier. Her head fits her body beautifully and contributes to her confident, substantial appearance without appearing overly heavy or coarse.
Coat Quality
Her coat has the texture and density we value in the breed, with a firm outer coat and a thick undercoat beneath it. This creates the protective, weather-resistant coat a working Black Russian Terrier was developed to have.
Feminine Strength
Trigger is unmistakably female, but she also carries impressive muscle and substance. She is heavier built and more powerful in appearance than Zhanna, while still maintaining femininity and balance.
Her strength does not come from exaggeration. It comes from solid construction, good proportions, and a body that looks capable of doing the work the breed was created to perform.
What We Hope to Preserve
In future generations, we hope to preserve Trigger’s overall balance.
She is substantial without being cumbersome, powerful without being extreme, and athletic without appearing light. Her structure supports her ability to move, explore, and remain active alongside her family.
We also value her calm, affectionate temperament. Trigger is naturally more submissive and lower drive than some Black Russian Terriers, with a gentle steadiness that makes her easy to live with and deeply connected to her people.
Our goal would be to preserve that combination of strength, soundness, and softness.
Our Approach to Pairing Trigger
Trigger is not a dog we view as needing major correction. Instead, she gives us a remarkably balanced foundation to build upon.
Choosing a male for Trigger will be less about fixing obvious weaknesses and more about finding a dog who complements her naturally. We will look for a strong, healthy male with excellent breed type, sound movement, a stable temperament, and qualities that blend well with her structure and pedigree.
The goal is not simply to produce puppies that resemble their parents. It is to create a pairing where both dogs support one another’s strengths and offer the potential for an even more consistent next generation.
Why Her Balance Matters
The Black Russian Terrier was developed to be a capable, powerful working dog. Every part of the dog should work together, from the head and neck to the topline, legs, feet, and movement.
Trigger represents the kind of balance we value because her qualities do not exist separately. Her strength supports her movement. Her structure supports her activity. Her temperament allows that power to remain calm, manageable, and connected to her family.
