Raising Black Russian Terrier Puppies for Families

Black Russian Terriers can be deeply loving, loyal, and protective family dogs when they are thoughtfully bred, properly socialized, and raised with clear boundaries. Our puppies are raised inside our busy family home, where they experience the everyday sounds, movement, handling, and joyful chaos that come with children.

Because Black Russian Terriers grow into large, powerful dogs, children and dogs should always be taught how to interact respectfully with one another.

We are raising family companions, but we are also very honest that good genetics must be supported by continued training and responsible parenting.

Black Russian Terriers are large, substantial working dogs. According to the AKC, adults typically weigh between 80 and 130 pounds, with males generally standing 27 to 30 inches tall and females standing 26 to 29 inches tall. 

Individual size can vary based on genetics, sex, structure, and overall development. Families should be prepared for a puppy who may eventually take up most of the couch while remaining completely convinced that personal space is optional.

Black Russian Terriers enjoy being active and involved with their families, but they are not typically as intense as breeds like Belgian Malinois or Siberian Huskies. They need regular walks, training, play, and mental stimulation, but they are also usually capable of relaxing at home without turning the house into a demolition project.

They are not low-energy dogs, and they may become restless if they are under-stimulated for too long. However, many Black Russian Terriers can comfortably handle quieter stretches of family life and then happily join you for an adventure when it is time to go. They tend to fall in that sweet spot between couch potato and full-time canine athlete.

Black Russian Terriers are generally considered a lower-shedding breed, but that does not mean they are maintenance-free or completely non-shedding. Their dense double coat requires consistent brushing, combing, bathing, and professional grooming to prevent tangles and matting.

Families should be prepared to establish a grooming routine from puppyhood. We begin introducing our puppies to handling and grooming-related experiences early so that coat care becomes a familiar part of life rather than a full-scale wrestling tournament.

No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Black Russian Terriers may shed less visibly than many breeds, but people can still react to dander, saliva, or other allergens.

Anyone with significant dog allergies should spend time around adult Black Russian Terriers before applying for a puppy. We never want a family to discover after bringing a puppy home that the breed is not compatible with their health needs.

They can be, but only for a first-time owner who is prepared to learn, seek guidance, and remain committed to continued training.

Black Russian Terriers are intelligent, strong, naturally protective dogs. They need calm leadership, consistency, early socialization, and clear expectations.

Previous dog ownership alone does not automatically make someone the right home, and being a first-time owner does not automatically make someone the wrong one. We look at the complete family, lifestyle, expectations, willingness to learn, and support system when considering an application.

Our breeding decisions are made carefully and never begin with appearance alone. The parents of our planned Black Russian Terrier litters complete breed-appropriate health testing, including evaluations for hips, elbows, cardiac health, patellas, and eyes, with results submitted through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals when applicable.

We also consider temperament, structure, pedigree, working ability, and how the strengths of each dog complement the other.

Health testing cannot promise that a dog will never experience a health problem, but it gives breeders valuable information for making more responsible decisions.

Our puppies are raised in our home as part of our family, not tucked away from normal life. They are introduced gradually to household sounds, children, different surfaces, handling, grooming foundations, age-appropriate challenges, toys, movement, and new experiences.

We use principles from the Puppy Culture program to support early neurological development, confidence, resilience, communication, and thoughtful socialization.

Our goal is not to expose puppies to everything as quickly as possible. It is to help each puppy learn that new experiences can be safe, manageable, and even exciting.

We do not choose puppies based only on color-collar photographs or which puppy happens to climb into someone’s lap first.

As the litter develops, we observe each puppy’s temperament, energy, confidence, recovery, social engagement, and individual strengths.

Our puppies are also evaluated with support from experienced professionals, including Sue Burrell and Bella Burton. We then use those observations, along with what we have learned about each approved family, to recommend the puppy most likely to thrive in that home.

Families are welcome to share their preferences, but final puppy placement is based on temperament and suitability rather than appearance or selection order alone. A puppy who looks perfect in a photograph may not be the puppy whose energy, confidence, or working potential best matches your household.

Matching protects both the puppy and the family. We want you to bring home the puppy who makes sense for your actual life, not simply the one who was the fluffiest at five weeks old.

Yes. If you live within approximately 12 hours of us, we are happy to personally bring your puppy to you. Families are responsible for the travel costs based on the distance and expenses at the time of delivery.

For homes outside that distance, we partner with DogHop, a professional puppy transportation company whose approach aligns with our values. Your puppy remains with their transporter throughout the trip, and families receive GPS tracking and photo updates so they can follow the journey in real time.

We will not ship our puppies in airplane cargo. We are flexible and willing to work with each family to create a safe, comfortable plan for getting their puppy home.

Our relationship does not end when your puppy leaves our home. Color Splash families receive continued breeder support, educational resources, grooming and training guidance, and access to our private Pawcasso Club community.

We want families to feel comfortable reaching out through the exciting seasons, the confusing seasons, and the occasional “Why is my enormous puppy carrying the patio furniture?” seasons. Your dog will always be part of the Color Splash family.

Families may apply with a particular goal in mind, including service work, therapy work, conformation, obedience, or other dog sports. We will consider that goal throughout the evaluation and matching process.

However, no responsible breeder can guarantee that a young puppy will mature into a successful service dog, show dog, or working prospect. We can evaluate potential, choose thoughtfully, and help build a strong foundation, but development also depends on training, health, maturity, environment, and the individual dog.

Every Color Splash puppy leaves with a piece of our hearts, and that does not change as they grow older. Our love and responsibility follow them for life.

Your contract requires that, if you are ever unable to care for your dog, regardless of their age, they must be returned to Color Splash Kennel. They may not be surrendered to a shelter or rescue, sold, rehomed, or transferred without contacting us first.

We will always work to protect the dog and help determine the safest next step. A Color Splash dog will never stop being one of ours.
