No. Although solid black is the color most closely associated with the breed, Black Russian Terriers can occasionally be born in colors such as black and tan, sable, blue, or salt and pepper.

The Black Russian Terrier was developed using at least 17 different breeds, several of which carried genes for colors and patterns beyond solid black. Those genes did not simply vanish when the breed was created. Some can remain hidden for generations and appear when a puppy inherits the right combination of recessive genes from both parents.

The AKC provides registration codes for several Black Russian Terrier colors, including black and tan, sable, blue, and salt and pepper. However, the current AKC conformation standard recognizes only solid black or black with scattered gray hairs in the show ring to follow the original breed standard.

Yes. Zahkar is a registered Black Russian Terrier with a documented pedigree. His black-and-tan coat is unusual for the breed, but his color does not erase his ancestry, temperament, or place within our family.

Zahkar is not part of our breeding program because Color Splash breeds toward the recognized Black Russian Terrier standard. He has not undergone breeding health testing.

His most important roles are comforting our children, watching over our home, and being deeply loved for exactly who he is.

Yes, I believe colored Black Russian Terriers can be bred, but not simply because they are colorful. 

A colored BRT should meet the same serious requirements as any breeding prospect: excellent temperament, complete breed-relevant health testing, sound structure, a well-researched pedigree, and a pairing that benefits the breed.

Color should never be used to excuse weaknesses, and breeders should not deliberately tighten pedigrees or sacrifice health just to produce rare-looking puppies.

My honest position would be: 

Do not breed a dog because of its color, and do not automatically exclude an otherwise exceptional dog solely because of its color.

For a preservation breeder, I would want any such decision supported by color DNA testing, genetic-diversity information, full OFA testing, evaluation of close relatives, and a clear explanation of what the dog contributes beyond its coat.

It is extremely important to consider genome-wide diversity as part of the breed’s long-term health, which makes the complete genetic picture more useful than judging a dog by one visible trait alone.

I can show you a beautifully structured, thoughtfully bred Black Russian Terrier who presents with color. I can also show you a solid-black Black Russian Terrier with poor structure, weak movement, questionable temperament, or serious faults that affect the dog’s ability to function as the breed was intended.

Color is one trait. It is not the entire dog.
