Meet Zhanna

At home, Zhanna is our peacekeeper. She watches the children closely and seems to know the difference between happy play and the moment when things become too loud, too rough, or too emotionally charged. When the energy crosses her invisible line, she lets everyone know it is time to settle down.

She is our most vocal Black Russian Terrier, but she does not bark just to hear herself. Zhanna speaks up when something feels amiss or falls outside her very specific standards for how a household should be run. She is extraordinarily intelligent, observant, and always paying attention.

Zhanna is not the kind of dog who curls up and cuddles with the children for hours. She is their guardian. She stays near, watches over them, and takes her responsibility to the family very seriously.

Her relationship with me, Brittani, is deep and life-changing. We learned together. I taught her what I needed from her, and from a young age, she happily rose to meet me there. We built our confidence side by side.

Zhanna was my first dog, which means she was also the dog I made the most mistakes with. She has always been patient, forgiving, and willing to keep learning with me. Very soon after she came home, I knew I needed other people to understand what was so special about this breed.

She is the reason Color Splash Kennel began to feel possible.

Why Zhanna Is in Our Breeding Program

Zhanna’s intelligence is something I could talk about forever. We have four Black Russian Terriers, but she operates on an entirely different level, and she absolutely knows it.

She is not especially interested in other dogs. In her entire life, she has only chosen to play with two dogs outside our home. Even the way she communicates with other dogs is a little unusual and can catch them off guard. You will have to follow along to fully understand what I mean. Zhanna takes her work seriously and has very little interest in canine tomfoolery.

When her playful side does appear, you can see it written all over her face. She usually goes searching for Daddy so the two of them can have a friendly sparring match.

Zhanna is extremely trainable, but she is also more independent than our other Black Russian Terriers. If you do not clearly teach her what you expect, she will assess the situation and make her own decision. That independence is part of what makes her so capable, but it also means she needs thoughtful, consistent communication.

It is also how she ended up sitting half-hung over a dining chair every night while we eat dinner. We never specifically taught her not to, she decided it was acceptable, and honestly, we love it. None of the other dogs do it. It is completely, unmistakably Zhanna.

Zhanna represents the qualities we want to preserve consistently in our program: exceptional intelligence, confidence, trainability, seriousness, and deep devotion to her family. She works closely with her handler, but she also carries the strong sense of fairness and responsibility the Black Russian Terrier is known for, paying close attention to what is happening and responding thoughtfully when something does not feel right.

Zhanna’s Structure, Movement, and Breed Type

Zhanna is a nicely proportioned Black Russian Terrier with smooth, confident movement and a natural ability to carry herself well. She has a strong topline, a well-coordinated stride, and a rear structure that supports both power and efficiency.

What stands out most about Zhanna is how well her body works together. She does not move as though each part is operating separately. She is not the heaviest or most substantial Black Russian Terrier, but she has balance, grace, and strength in motion. Those qualities are extremely important to us and are traits we would be very happy to preserve in future generations.

Head and Expression

Zhanna has an alert, intelligent expression that immediately reflects her personality. She is observant, engaged, and highly aware of what is happening around her, and that comes through clearly in her face.

Her head is narrower and more refined than our ideal for the breed. In future pairings, we would like to add more width, depth, and overall substance to the head while preserving the expression that makes her unmistakably Zhanna.

Our goal is not to create an overly heavy or coarse head. We want to strengthen breed type while maintaining femininity, balance, and the bright, thoughtful expression that is such an important part of who she is.

Coat Quality

Zhanna has a good, wiry outer coat with the correct protective texture we value in the Black Russian Terrier. Her undercoat is less dense than that of some more heavily coated dogs, which makes her coat somewhat easier to maintain.

This lighter density can be practical for grooming and everyday care, but the breed was developed with a substantial, weather-resistant coat. In future generations, we would be open to increasing undercoat density while preserving the firm outer coat and manageable texture Zhanna already has.

Coat is not evaluated only by volume. Texture, protection, condition, and the way the coat supports the dog’s overall breed type are all part of the picture.

Feminine Strength

Zhanna has a distinctly feminine appearance while still carrying the strength, confidence, and presence expected in a Black Russian Terrier.

She is not coarse or overly heavy, yet she never appears fragile. Her femininity comes through in her refinement, expression, and proportions, while her working ability, muscle, and confidence give her the substance needed to remain true to the breed.

This balance between femininity and strength is something we value deeply. We want females who look like females without losing the power and capability that define the Black Russian Terrier.

What We Hope to Preserve

In future litters, our goal is to preserve Zhanna’s exceptional mind, balanced movement, strong rear, and solid topline.

Her intelligence is one of her most defining qualities. She is highly observant, quick to understand patterns, and deeply connected to her handler. She is not simply trainable. She thinks, evaluates, and responds with purpose.

We also hope to preserve her athleticism and efficiency of movement. Her rear structure supports power and drive, while her topline allows her to remain balanced and coordinated in motion.

Zhanna brings together intelligence, working ability, femininity, and sound movement in a way that makes her incredibly valuable to our program.

What We Hope to Improve

Through thoughtful pairing, we would like to improve overall substance, chest development, and head type.

Zhanna is more refined than our long-term ideal, so we will look for a male who can contribute greater width, depth of body, bone, and strength through the front without sacrificing movement or balance.

We would also like to add more breadth and substance to the head while preserving her intelligent expression and feminine character.

The goal is not to erase what Zhanna is. It is to pair her with a male whose strengths complement her naturally, creating the possibility of puppies who retain her mind, movement, and working ability while developing greater overall breed type.

Why Structure Matters

The Black Russian Terrier was developed to be a powerful, capable working dog. Structure is not simply about appearance or winning in the show ring. It directly affects how a dog moves, works, ages, and remains comfortable throughout life.

A dog with good balance and sound construction can move more efficiently and place less unnecessary strain on the body. The topline, front, rear, chest, feet, and proportions must all work together to support the dog as a complete animal.

When we evaluate Zhanna, we are not searching for one impressive feature or pretending that any dog is perfect. We look at the whole dog.

We consider what her structure allows her to do well, which qualities are worth preserving, and where a carefully selected pairing could strengthen the next generation.

Responsible breeding is not about reproducing a dog exactly as she is. It is about understanding her honestly, honoring her strengths, and making thoughtful decisions with the future of the breed in mind.
