Oops, I Named My Black Russian Terrier Kennel Color Splash

"Why are you Color Splash Kennel when you breed BLACK Russian Terriers?"

It's a fair question. And trust me, it's one I've heard more than a few times. Sometimes out of genuine curiosity, and sometimes... well, let's just say curiosity isn't always the motivation. 😂

I mean, I get it. We're talking about a breed developed by the Soviet military after World War II, with a history rooted in serious working and guard duties, and a name that literally has the word BLACK in it.

And here I come with a kennel called Color Splash, a bright, colorful brand, and apparently absolutely no understanding that everything in the dog world is supposed to be serious.

Oops. My bad. 🎨

But here's the thing. Color Splash wasn't a name I pulled out of thin air just to get people talking. There's actually a story behind it.

A story involving one extraordinary Black Russian Terrier who completely changed my life, a fascination with the breed that took me somewhere I never expected, a few questionable first impressions, and a whole lot of learning along the way.

So, why Color Splash?

Well, the answer is a little more colorful than our dogs.

It All Started With a Black Russian Terrier Named Zhanna

Believe it or not, I didn't get Zhanna because I wanted to become a breeder. I wasn't dreaming of starting a kennel, studying pedigrees, or spending my weekends at dog shows.

I just wanted a dog. 😂

But Zhanna apparently had other plans.

From the beginning, she was something else. Smart, outgoing, incredibly opinionated, and just spicy enough to make sure nobody forgot who was really in charge. (Spoiler: it wasn't me.)

But underneath that big personality was something I hadn't expected. She was incredibly tuned in to me. She noticed things, responded to my emotions, and seemed to understand what I needed before I even realized it myself.

That connection eventually grew into something I never could have imagined: Zhanna became my service dog.

And somewhere along the way, I realized I hadn't just fallen in love with Zhanna. I'd fallen in love with Black Russian Terriers.

I wanted to understand everything about them. Their history, their temperament, their pedigrees, and what makes these incredible dogs tick.

One question led to another, and before I knew it, I was diving headfirst into a world I hadn't even known existed.

So, Why Color Splash?

Well, here's where things get interesting. 😂

When I first started researching Black Russian Terriers, I stumbled across something I hadn't expected. Colored Russian Terriers (CLICK).

Wait a minute. They come in OTHER colors?!

I was fascinated! I thought they were beautiful, interesting, and honestly, I wanted to know everything about them. What I didn't fully understand at the time was just how controversial the subject of color could be within the Black Russian Terrier community.

And when I say controversial, I mean people have some very strong opinions. 👀

But I fell in love with one of those colorful dogs anyway, and about six months after bringing Zhanna home, I imported my second Russian Terrier.

Somewhere in the middle of that adventure, Color Splash Kennel was born.

Now, I could tell you the name was entirely about the dogs, but that wouldn't be the whole truth.

You see, we're a pretty colorful family ourselves. Our family brings together different ethnic backgrounds, personalities, interests, and perspectives. Throw in my love for creativity, bright colors, and all things a little unconventional, and suddenly Color Splash feels pretty fitting.

Our house is loud, our lives are busy, our dogs have personalities bigger than themselves, and there's rarely a dull moment around here.

And somewhere along the way, the name stopped being about coat color.

Color Splash Kennel because our dogs may be black, but our lives have never been black and white.

Falling in Love With the Breed Meant Learning About It, Too

Once I fell in love with Black Russian Terriers, I wanted to know EVERYTHING. And I quickly discovered just how much there was to learn.

I started studying pedigrees, learning to navigate breeding databases, researching health testing, and trying to understand what makes a structurally and temperamentally sound Black Russian Terrier.

Eventually, that curiosity led me into the show ring and introduced me to some incredibly knowledgeable breeders who generously shared their experience.

Of course, not every experience was sunshine and rainbows. 😂

The Black Russian Terrier community has some very strong opinions, and I learned pretty quickly that color was one subject guaranteed to get people talking.

But here's where I might ruffle a few more feathers.

I believe conversations about responsibly incorporating colored dogs into black breeding programs deserve consideration, not automatic dismissal.

When a dog has excellent bone, sound conformation, strong health results, a beautiful pedigree, and the correct temperament, I believe those qualities deserve serious evaluation.

And when genetics can be used to plan for black offspring, I think there's room for an informed discussion about what those dogs could contribute to a breeding program.

That doesn't mean ignoring the breed standard. It means asking thoughtful questions about genetic diversity, health, structure, and temperament rather than making decisions based on color alone.

I know not everyone will agree with me, and that's okay.

I'm not interested in learning only from people who share my opinions.
I'm interested in learning everything I can to make better decisions for the dogs I love.

There's More Than One Way to Love Black Russian Terriers

Let's get one thing straight. Black Russian Terriers are not a breed to take lightly.

These are powerful, intelligent working dogs with a fascinating military history, strong protective instincts, and a breed standard that deserves respect. And I have an enormous amount of admiration for the breeders who have dedicated decades to preserving them.

But somewhere along the way, I think we've confused taking the breed seriously with having to take ourselves seriously all the time.

Because apparently, if you breed a big, intimidating working dog, your website needs to be dark, your photos need to be serious, and smiling is optional. 😂

Well, that's just not us.

I love studying pedigrees, discussing structure, researching genetics, and spending weekends at dog shows. But I also love sharing videos of my dogs being ridiculous, watching them interact with our children, and letting people see the everyday chaos of our very full house.

Those two sides of my life don't contradict each other. They're both part of why I love this breed.

I don't believe my colorful brand takes anything away from the seriousness of our breeding decisions.

And I certainly don't think there's only one way to represent a breed you love.

We take our dogs, their health, their temperament, and their future seriously.

Ourselves? Well... we're still working on that. 😂

What Color Splash Kennel Stands For

So, what are we actually building here at Color Splash Kennel?

Well, it's a little more than a place to find a Black Russian Terrier puppy. ❤️

We're a family-based breeding program in Massachusetts, and our goal isn't simply to produce beautiful dogs. We want to raise healthy, stable, well-rounded Black Russian Terriers who are thoughtfully matched with families who will love them as much as we do.

But we also want dogs who can do something.

Black Russian Terriers were developed to work, and that's a part of their history I never want to lose. Whether that means excelling in conformation, participating in dog sports, becoming dependable working partners, or having the right temperament for service or therapy work, we want to produce dogs with the structure, intelligence, stability, and versatility to succeed in a variety of roles.

Of course, not every puppy will be suited for every job. That's why thoughtful breeding and understanding each puppy as an individual matter so much.

We study pedigrees, prioritize health testing, carefully consider our pairings, and spend an almost ridiculous amount of time learning about puppy development and temperament.

Our puppies are raised right in the middle of our family life, and we use multiple professional temperament evaluations to help guide our puppy matching decisions.

Because finding the right puppy isn't just about picking the cutest face. (Although, let's be honest, they're ALL going to be ridiculously cute. 😂)

But one of the things I'm most excited about building is the community that comes after our puppies go home.

Through our Pawcasso Club, educational resources, and ongoing support, we want our puppy families to feel like they're part of something bigger.

I don't want to hand someone a puppy and wave goodbye. I want to celebrate their milestones, answer their questions, watch their dogs grow, and build relationships that last a lifetime.

That's what Color Splash Kennel stands for.

Thoughtful breeding. Capable dogs. Connected families. And a whole lot of color along the way. 🎨

So, Why Color Splash Kennel?

Could I have chosen a more traditional kennel name? Absolutely.

Would it have raised fewer eyebrows? Probably. 😂

But it wouldn't have told our story.

Color Splash is a reminder of where this journey started, the dogs who brought us here, the people we've met, the things we've learned, and the family we are.

And yes, I know there will always be people who don't agree with everything I do. That's okay. I never expected everyone to.

But I hope that when people hear the name Color Splash Kennel, they eventually think of more than just a colorful logo or a controversial name.

I hope they think of beautiful, capable Black Russian Terriers, thoughtful breeding, happy families, and a community that genuinely loves these dogs.

So yes, we're Color Splash Kennel.

Yes, we breed BLACK Russian Terriers.

And no, we're not changing the name. 😉🖤
